What are smart locks?

A smart lock, according to online encyclopedia Wikipedia, is “an electromechanical lock which is designed to perform locking and unlocking operations on a door when it receives such instructions from an authorized device using a wireless protocol and a cryptographic key to execute the authorization process. It also monitors access and sends alerts for the different events it monitors and some other critical events related to the status of the device.”

A smart lock, not unlike the smartphone, performs more operations than it is expected to, and as such, are considered to be cost-efficient gadgets that increase security around homes by incorporating interactivity and ingenious technology. Interestingly, some smart locks can be controlled by the latest smartphones we have today.

UniKey’s Kevo Lock

The Kevo Lock, sold by Kwikset, replaces your regular deadbolt and actually opens by touch when you carry your key fob with you or have their iPhone app downloaded on your phone. Aside from these digital technologies, they also have a Kwikset Smartkey, which is a mechanical cylinder that uses a normal key. So you have many ways to open it, all hassle-free.

The only disadvantages that come with using this lock is limited device support (its app is only available for the latest iPhones) and limited Bluetooth support.
